The pound and the kilogram

The pound descends from the Roman libra pondo, "a pound by weight" — which is also where the abbreviation "lb" comes from (libra). The English pound went through several definitions over the centuries (the Tower pound, the troy pound, the avoirdupois pound). The avoirdupois pound, used today for almost all everyday weight in the United States and the United Kingdom, was standardized at exactly 0.45359237 kilograms by the 1959 International Yard and Pound Agreement.

The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. For most of its history (1889–2019) the kilogram was defined by a single physical object: the International Prototype of the Kilogram, a platinum-iridium cylinder kept under multiple bell jars in a vault near Paris. In 2019 the definition was changed to a fundamental constant of nature — the Planck constant — meaning the kilogram is now defined by physics, not by an artifact that might subtly change mass over time.

The conversion factor

kilograms = pounds × 0.45359237

This is exact, by definition. Every pound-to-kilogram conversion you'll ever do (avoirdupois pounds) flows from this single equality. Troy pounds, used for precious metals, are different: 1 troy pound = 0.3732417216 kg.

A mental shortcut

Divide pounds by 2.2 for a quick estimate. 150 lb ÷ 2.2 = 68 kg (actual: 68.04). 200 lb ÷ 2.2 = 91 kg (actual: 90.72). Or, even faster: halve the pound value and subtract a small amount. 150 lb ÷ 2 = 75; subtract about 10% (7.5) → 67.5 kg. Both shortcuts are good to within a kilogram for ordinary human-scale weights.

When you'd actually use this conversion

Body weight is the most frequent case. International medical records and health apps use kilograms; US patients are usually familiar with pounds. Drug dosing in pediatrics, anesthesia, and many specialties is calculated per kilogram of body weight regardless of country, so a US clinician converts patient pounds to kg routinely.

Shipping and freight are next. International shipping rates are by kilogram or by metric ton (1,000 kg). US domestic shipping uses pounds. A 50-lb box destined for international export has to be relabeled as 22.7 kg. Customs duties and import taxes are usually computed in metric.

Sports and fitness intersect with this constantly. Olympic weightlifting, powerlifting, and most international competitive lifts use kilograms. American gym equipment is usually labeled in pounds. Athletes who train across both systems carry the conversion in their head instinctively: 100 kg = 220 lb, 50 kg = 110 lb, and so on.

Common mistakes

Confusing avoirdupois pounds with troy pounds catches people working with precious metals. A "pound" of gold or silver in a precious-metals context is a troy pound (0.3732 kg, 12 troy ounces), not the everyday avoirdupois pound. The difference is about 18%, enough to matter.

Conflating mass and weight is a subtle technical mistake. Kilograms measure mass (how much matter there is); pounds technically can refer to mass or to weight (the force gravity exerts on a mass). In everyday US use, "pounds" almost always means mass. In physics, you have to distinguish: the pound-mass (lb_m) and the pound-force (lb_f) differ by a factor of standard gravity (≈9.81). For weight-loss tracking, recipe scaling, and shipping, the everyday usage is fine. For engineering, be careful.
